Sylvie began in 1994 as an experiment, a garage wine from the Lopez Vineyard, planted in 1989 on east Oakville's Magic Mountain. In 2010 the partners committed to it as a commercial label. It is named for Sylvi Rintanen, grandmother of partner Sarita Sylvie Lopez, and the partners today include Brian Atwood and Henry Lopez.
The vineyard is just over half an acre of iron-rich volcanic soil from an ancient landslide, farmed organically by Kendall Smith. Production is tiny, about four barrels a year of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, and the estate recently made its first white wine. Winemaker Sally Johnson Blum, with more than 25 years of experience, took over from Kurt Niznik after his decade at the helm.
With so little wine, Sylvie is offered to its list: sign up for The Short List or buy through the estate's Acquire page. Questions go to inquire@sylvie-estate.com. The estate publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do.

Since Sylvie does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Hotel Yountville, a stone-walled inn at the edge of town, and North Block Hotel are both in Yountville, about 20 minutes from the first stop in St. Helena. The day fits about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 20 minutes away. The Davies family's red wine house, the still-wine side of Schramsberg, with seated tastings in St. Helena. Seated tastings of current releases are $70 to $95, about 60 to 75 minutes. By appointment only; 21 and over, no children or pets.
About 8 minutes away. The historic Inglewood Estate west of St. Helena, with a private lake, gardens and caves, where an Estate Ambassador leads each tasting. Estate tastings are $75 to $100, about 90 minutes, and fees are refunded with qualifying purchases. By reservation; days and times are confirmed when booking.
About 18 minutes away. Lunch at R+D Kitchen, a relaxed Yountville spot with a sushi bar and a patio, open for lunch daily. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 12 minutes away. A husband-and-wife label from a former Spottswoode winemaker, poured privately in a vineyard setting at Arrow&Branch in the Oak Knoll District. The Zeitgeist Tasting Experience is $85; we allow about an hour. By reservation for parties of 1 to 10.
Back by about 4:10 p.m., about six hours after pickup.
About $230 to $280 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. The fourth stop is there if the day allows.
