Proprietor Richard Talmadge went looking for a Napa Valley property in the late 1990s and found an old cattle ranch in the hills above St. Helena, with views of Lake Hennessey. His young triplets shouted "We'll take it!" when they saw it, so he named the vineyard Three Twins. Stone the Crows, a British and Australian expression of surprise, was his reaction to the first wines.
Talmadge redesigned the vineyard in 2005: 11,000 vines at about 700 feet on the northern slopes of Lake Hennessey, in five blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon, with olive, stone fruit and citrus trees around them. Jason Ray of Napa Select Vineyard Services farms it, and Thomas Rivers Brown has made the wine since the first vintage in 2010. Antonio Galloni of Vinous singled it out as one of the most striking vineyard sites in Napa Valley.
Brown makes a flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, a second wine called Fallen Feather and, in exceptional years, The Golden Crow, bottled only in magnums. The wines are offered through the mailing list and the online shop. The estate does not host: "We are not open for tours, tastings or visits at this time," the winery says. The day below takes you to three nearby estates that do.
Stone the Crows does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Harvest Inn.
Since Stone the Crows does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, two of them also made by Thomas Rivers Brown. Meadowood, at the foot of Howell Mountain, is about 15 minutes from the first stop on Pritchard Hill, and Harvest Inn, a garden hotel at the south end of St. Helena, about 20 minutes. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 15 minutes away. A family winery in a pyramid-shaped building high on Pritchard Hill, above the same Lake Hennessey that Stone the Crows looks over. The Pinnacle of Pritchard Hill Tour & Tasting, with a vineyard and winery tour and current releases, is $125 for 90 minutes. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by reservation.
About 20 minutes away. Lunch at Market, an American restaurant in a historic brick and stone building on Main Street in St. Helena, open for lunch Monday to Saturday from noon. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 25 minutes away. A Howell Mountain estate above the fog, on a vineyard first planted in the 1860s, where Thomas Rivers Brown also makes the wine. The estate tasting is $75; we plan about an hour and a quarter. By appointment, typically Tuesday to Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
About 20 minutes away. A small, family-owned winery on the Silverado Trail from winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown and his partners. The Estate Tasting is $85, 60 to 90 minutes. By appointment only. A good place to taste Brown's style once more before heading back.
Back by about 4:40 p.m., about six and three-quarter hours after pickup.
About $285 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Outpost typically hosts Tuesday to Saturday and Market serves lunch Monday to Saturday, so this day works Tuesday to Saturday. We book Outpost's 1:30 p.m. tasting, and the day ends about 4:40 p.m.
