Chappellet Winery

About the Winery

Donn and Molly Chappellet founded the winery in 1967, after they saw the beauty of what was then a little-known Pritchard Hill. Their first purchase was 320 acres in the hills east of the Silverado Trail. The second generation, with Cyril Chappellet as CEO and chairman, now runs the winery, and it is still owned by the family.

The estate vineyard rises from about 800 to 1,800 feet on rocky volcanic soils and is split into 48 blocks, most of them Cabernet Sauvignon. It has been certified organic by CCOF since 2012. The family's Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, first made in 1997 from the best lots, received perfect 100-point scores for both the 2012 and 2016 vintages.

The winery itself is a pyramid designed by the artist Ed Moses and built in 1968. Wine writer Hugh Johnson called it "the most remarkable wine cathedral of the modern world." Visits are tours and tastings by reservation: you walk the vineyards and the winery with a host, then sit down to taste current releases inside the pyramid.

Tasting Fees

$125 for the Pinnacle of Pritchard Hill Tour & Tasting, 90 minutes, with a vineyard and winery tour and a tasting of current releases. $200 for the Pritchard Hill Estate Tour & Tasting, with barrel tasting, the most sought-after wines and local cheeses.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Auberge du Soleil or Meadowood Napa Valley.

10:00 · Pickup at Auberge du Soleil or Meadowood Napa Valley

Chappellet sits high on Pritchard Hill, so the drive up takes a little longer than most. Auberge du Soleil, a hillside resort above Rutherford, is about 15 minutes away, and Meadowood Napa Valley, a 250-acre resort in St. Helena, is about 20 minutes away. A 10:30 tasting leaves time for the winding road. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:30 · Chappellet Winery

The Pinnacle of Pritchard Hill Tour & Tasting, 90 minutes ($125). The Pritchard Hill Estate Tour & Tasting ($200) is the deeper visit, with barrel tasting and cheese pairings; book it 2 to 3 months ahead.

12:15 · Mumm Napa

About 15 minutes away. A sparkling wine house on the Silverado Trail in Rutherford, open daily with a last seating at 5 p.m. Sip & Sparkle is $48 and takes about 60 minutes. Reservations are recommended; 21 and over only, with no pets.

1:25 · Lunch at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch

About 12 minutes away. American farmhouse cooking on Main Street in St. Helena, using food from the ranch's own farm and vineyards. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. (11 a.m. on weekends). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:40 · Inglenook

About 8 minutes away. A Rutherford estate dating to 1879, with a restored château and cave cellars. The Legacy Tasting of library estate reds and Rubicon, with a tasting plate, is $100 and takes 60 minutes, for parties of 4 or fewer. By reservation, Wednesday to Monday; guests 12 and older are welcome.

3:45 · Back to your hotel

Back by 4:00 p.m., six hours after pickup.

Optional: ZD Wines

Adds about an hour. A winery on the Silverado Trail right next to Mumm Napa. Walk-in tastings are welcome based on availability; the Vineyard View Tasting is $50 for about an hour. Open daily until 4 p.m., so fit it in before lunch.

About $275 to $350 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Inglenook's Legacy Tasting is not offered on Tuesdays. On a Tuesday we swap in Beaulieu Vineyard, open daily, where The 1885 Tasting is $50 for 60 minutes.
