About the Winery

Robert and Milli Pintacsi met while studying in Florence in 2007, and their family background is Hungarian and Punjabi. Robert studied viticulture and enology at UC Davis and worked as an assistant winemaker at Far Niente and Dolce before the couple started St. Romedius in Napa, where they live with three sons, two dogs and six chickens.

The name comes from a fourth-century saint who, in the legend, rode a bear across the Alps, and the Pintacsis take it as a metaphor: "we guide the wines to bottle instead of forcing them into a specific style." They use sustainable or organic fruit, much of it from Buckeye Ranch Vineyard in Lafayette, and make small batches such as a Lamorinda Red, Tocai Friulano, Rosé of Sangiovese and Muscat Canelli.

St. Romedius has no tasting room and publishes no visits. Its wines are sold in its online shop and through a wine club, whose members get discounts, early access to new releases and invitations to special events, and the winery lists restaurants and shops that carry it. The day below takes you to three family estates in and around St. Helena that do welcome guests.

Tasting Fees

12:05 · Tres Sabores

About 20 minutes away. Julie Johnson's organic farm and winery on the Rutherford Bench, where you taste at your own table by the vines and wander among sheep, guinea fowl and olive trees. The Portfolio Wine Tasting Experience is $65, typically 90 minutes, for up to 6 (waived with four bottles). By appointment, Wednesday to Monday, from 10 a.m. to the last tasting at 3 p.m.

1:45 · Lunch at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch

About 8 minutes away. Lunch at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch at the south end of St. Helena, a farm-to-table restaurant open daily for lunch from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:00 · Faust

About 8 minutes away. Coombsville Cabernet poured in a restored matte-black Victorian north of St. Helena. Act I is $75, 60 to 90 minutes, with snacks from the Haus kitchen. Reservations are required; open Thursday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

4:15 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:25 p.m., about six and a half hours after pickup.

About $240 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Behrens hosts Monday through Saturday, Tres Sabores is closed Tuesday and Faust is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so this day works Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Monday.
