Sphaerics is the winery of Brian Ball and Laura Jones, a husband-and-wife team of wine industry veterans who founded it in 2022. Laura makes the wines; she refined her Chardonnay and Pinot Noir skills over five years at Aubert and a stint at Domaine Armand Rousseau in Burgundy. Brian runs the business and sales.
The focus is narrow on purpose: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from carefully chosen California vineyards, made with traditional methods. The couple say they want wines that engage the mind as much as the senses, and the name nods to the generations of winemakers whose knowledge they inherited. Production is small and most wine goes to the mailing list.
Visits take place at the winery in Calistoga, by appointment. You start in the cellar with a look at how the wines are made and a barrel preview of the new vintage, then sit down to a flight of recent releases. It takes about 90 minutes, and it is a good fit for guests who enjoy Burgundy and like to talk with the people who make the wine.
$75 per person, about 90 minutes, with a cellar visit, a barrel preview and a seated flight of recent releases. Waived with a wine purchase during the visit.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
