About the Winery

Chris Dearden grew up in an agricultural town in the Central Valley, wrote his own major in viticulture, enology and winery operations at UC Davis and earned an MBA at Berkeley's Haas School. Over a 40-year career he has been winemaker, general manager and consulting winemaker, and he credits his years with the cooperage Seguin Moreau, working alongside first growths and grand crus, as the biggest influence on his style.

Chris bought this 12-acre Carneros estate in 2006 and founded the Dearden Wines portfolio in 2010: Sleeping Giant Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Little Giant, Argus Pinot Noir and the Iron Series. The estate vineyard is planted to five clones of Pinot Noir. The family restored the residence and a historic water tower, and the boutique winery begun in late 2020 runs on solar power and recycles its water through a worm digester.

Visits are by appointment. The Single AVA Tour & Tasting starts with a walk around the estate, glass in hand, then settles into a tasting room with views of the Carneros hills from almost every angle. The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Sensory Experience pours bottles from heralded Napa vineyards and vintages, plus a taste from a barrel that has not been released.

Tasting Fees

$75 for the Sleeping Giant Single AVA Tour & Tasting and $150 for the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Sensory Experience, which includes an unreleased barrel sample. Durations are not published; we allow about 75 minutes.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
