Sky Vineyards has grown estate wine high on Mount Veeder since 1973, near the crown of the mountain between the Napa and Sonoma valleys. Founder Lore Olds paints the landscapes that appear on many of the labels and designs the artwork for each new vintage. The family lost its home and part of the vineyard in the October 2017 fires, but stayed on and kept making wine.
Fourteen acres of Zinfandel and Syrah grow at 2,100 feet on an east-facing hillside of reddish volcanic soil, organically farmed and dry-farmed under permanent cover crops. Fruit is picked by hand, fermented in open-top one-ton bins, punched down by hand three times a day, pressed in a traditional basket press and aged in French oak. The winery runs off the power grid on solar panels.
Sky has no tasting room or posted hours, and visits are rare. They are by private request, and we arrange it on your behalf. It is a long, winding drive up the mountain, and the reward is a winery that still does everything by hand, with Zinfandels the family describes as full of raspberry, violet and pepper, and known for aging beautifully.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Good to Know
The drive up Mount Veeder is long and winding; allow extra time. Wines are sold in the online store, which ships to most states.
Pickup at 9:45 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Archer Hotel Napa or Andaz Napa.
We pick up at 9:45 a.m. because Sky sits near the top of Mount Veeder, about 35 minutes from Archer Hotel Napa and Andaz Napa in downtown Napa. Sky sets its own time, so we adjust the day around it. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
A private visit at the winery, arranged on your behalf. We plan about an hour; the format and any fee are confirmed by the winery.
About 25 minutes away. Jeff and Karen Fontanella's family winery on the slopes of Mount Veeder. The Fontanella Journey Tasting pours four current releases and a barrel sample with a cheese plate ($65, 75 minutes). By appointment, daily, with reservations from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Angèle, a French brasserie on the Napa River in downtown Napa, serving lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 12 minutes away. A family estate on the historic Rapp Ranch in Coombsville, where you taste on the Grand Terrace and can add a horseback ride through the vineyard. Wine Tasting on the Grand Terrace, with a cheese and charcuterie board, is $95 for 90 minutes. Open daily by reservation; final seating at 3:30 p.m.
Back by about 4:30 p.m., about six and three-quarter hours after pickup.
About $160 per person in tasting fees for Fontanella and Shadybrook, paid directly to each winery, plus Sky's fee, confirmed with the appointment.
Sky is remote and confirms its own visit time, so we may swap the order of the morning. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours, back by about 4:30 p.m.
