About the Winery

Harry and Ellen Parsley bought their land east of Napa in 1996. Harry had joined Buena Vista Winery in 1993 and grown its sales from 160,000 to more than 500,000 cases. They planted Cabernet to cover the cost of the land, but after the first harvest the plan changed: they would make their own wine. Silver Stag became a family project, drawing on Harry, Ellen, John, Lil' Ellen and Tim.

The vineyard sits in a gentle swale at the foot of Mount George in the Coombsville AVA, about three miles from the bay. It was planted to plums at the end of the 19th century, and its microclimate, a little warmer than Carneros but cooled by marine air up the Napa River, gives small berries and concentrated fruit. It is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Petit Verdot, farmed by vineyard manager Nabor Camarena.

The first Silver Stag Cabernet was the 2001. The current releases are Coombsville Reserve Cabernets, including the 2022, labeled Harry's Vintage, at $120 a bottle, sold through the winery's online store and mailing list. The winery lists its address but publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below stays in Coombsville at estates that do.
