Porter Family Vineyards began as a dream shared by Tom and Beverly Porter. After buying land in Napa Valley's Coombsville AVA, they spent years studying the hillsides and the seasons before deciding how to farm it, drawing on Tom's scientific background and their shared love of nature. The family makes limited-production Bordeaux varietals.
To keep the landscape intact, the Porters built their winery inside a hill in the middle of the vineyard, about 50 feet underground. The cave is 515 feet long and covers 17,000 square feet, with fermentation bays, an in-cave wine library and a gravity-flow crush pad alongside. During construction the crew found fossilized sandpiper footprints, which now appear on every bottle.
Vines still grow on top of the hill, and the only sign of the winery is its two entrances. Tastings are private and by appointment, held inside the cave for one group at a time. Visits are arranged by phone or email; we make the request on your behalf and confirm the format and any fee.
Porter Family Vineyards does not publish a tasting fee. Any private visit and its cost are confirmed by the winery when the appointment is made.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
