About the Winery

From the late 19th century the ranch belonged to the Darms family and grew prunes and other fruit. Wade and Mary Elizabeth Shifflett bought it in 1942 and added horses and cattle, and in 1980 Wade Jr., his wife Olga and their five children planted grapes. Today those five siblings own the ranch together as partners.

The family calls it simply The Ranch. It sits against the Mayacamas Mountains just south of Yountville, on what the family describes as the southernmost true alluvial fan of the range, with 52 acres of Bordeaux varieties. The family restored a 1902 olive grove, converted a barn into a small winery, and in 2017 began making wine under the Shifflett label.

Winemaker Sarah Donley, formerly assistant winemaker at Colgin Cellars and winemaker at ADAMVS, makes the estate-grown wines. Shifflett offers a limited number of tours and tastings each week, arranged by email; we send the request on your behalf. Most wine goes to the Reserved Allocation list.

Tasting Fees

Shifflett does not publish a tasting fee. The format and any fee are confirmed by the family when the visit is set.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
