Lewis Seiler has been a sculptor for more than 60 years, with work shown in New York and San Francisco and a bronze foundry at his former ranch in Bolinas. In 2006 he bought a small vineyard on Glass Mountain in the St. Helena AVA, part of what had been Criscione Vineyards, whose Glass Mountain fruit has gone into wines from Harlan, Araujo and Ovid. He sold his Cabernet grapes for more than a decade before making his own wine in 2019.
The Wappo once used one hillside of the vineyard as an armory for obsidian-tipped weapons, and shards of obsidian still lie in the volcanic tuff, helping the soil drain. The vines are Cabernet Sauvignon, clone 4, at about 375 feet, in the foothills below Howell Mountain. Francisco Alfaro has tended them by hand since they were planted, block by block. Seiler compares building a wine's layers to shaping a sculpture.
Seiler Vineyard is a private residence, not open to the public, and tastings are by appointment only, requested through the winery's website. Fees and times are not published. It is a small, personal visit with someone who sees wine the way an artist sees bronze. We confirm the time with the estate and build the day around it, with Howell Mountain and the valley floor both close by.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. Seiler Estate does not publish a tasting fee.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Harvest Inn. Seiler sets appointment times on request, so the start may move.
Meadowood, at the foot of Howell Mountain, is about 10 minutes from Glass Mountain, and Harvest Inn, on Highway 29, about 12. If the estate offers a different time, we build the day around it. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
A private tasting at the vineyard, set by appointment. The estate does not publish a length of visit, so we allow about an hour.
About 20 minutes away. A mountain Cabernet house with an estate vineyard at 2,300 feet on the summit of Howell Mountain. The Summit Experience, a guided tour and tasting at the estate, is $135 (refunded with a case purchase); we plan about 75 minutes. By appointment only, with limited reservations.
About 25 minutes away. A small, much-loved Italian restaurant on Main Street in St. Helena. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 8 minutes away. A Leonardini family winery south of St. Helena with views of the Mayacamas and its own pickleball court among the vines. The seated Elevated Cabernet Sauvignon Flight, with a library wine, is $90; we allow about an hour. Open daily; reservations recommended.
Back at your hotel by about 3:50 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
About $225 per person in tasting fees for Robert Craig and Whitehall Lane, plus Seiler's fee, which is confirmed with the appointment; each paid directly to the winery.
Seiler hosts by appointment on request, so the day is fixed once the estate confirms a time. Robert Craig has limited reservations, so book early.
