About the Winery
Fred Schrader built Schrader Cellars around Cabernet Sauvignon from Beckstoffer To Kalon in Oakville, adding labels such as Old Sparky and CCS, named for his wife Carol. Constellation Brands bought the winery in June 2017 and kept winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, who still makes the wines. The winery counts 35 perfect 100-point scores.
Most of the wines are single-vineyard bottlings from the To Kalon Vineyard, one of the most famous Cabernet sites in California, with a few from other Napa Valley vineyards. Production is small, between 2,500 and 4,000 cases a year at the time of the sale, and several To Kalon bottlings can come out of a single vintage, which is part of the fun of tasting them side by side.
Schrader has no winery of its own to visit; tastings are held at the To Kalon Collective at the Robert Mondavi Winery on Highway 29. The Schrader Cellars Experience is a private tasting for collectors: five wines from To Kalon and other Napa sources with small plates, guided by a host. Mailing list members in good standing get one complimentary tasting a year for up to four people.

About 8 minutes away. A family estate on the Rutherford Bench since 1985, certified organic and solar powered, with its winery built underground in caves. The private visit walks the vineyard and caves before a tasting of the estate wines, $150, about 90 minutes. By appointment Tuesday to Saturday, with first access for members, so we request your date early; the estate confirms the start time.

About 12 minutes away. Lunch high on Rutherford Hill with the whole valley below. A small, organically farmed family estate on the St. Helena benchland, where every private tasting starts with a short walk through the winery and vines and is poured in a salon filled with the family's art.
