About the Winery

Scalon began, in the partners' words, on a Friday night over a beer and some tequila, when friends Cruz Calderon and Jesus Espinoza decided to make wine together. Jesus came to Napa from Mexico more than 30 years ago and planted vines as a laborer; he later became vineyard manager at Caldwell Vineyard in Coombsville. In 2005 Cruz started building the wine cave at Caldwell.

Jesus now owns the small hillside vineyard next to Caldwell that he planted as a young man, on thin volcanic soils in the Coombsville AVA. Since 2014 the wines have been made by Julien Fayard, who worked with Philippe Melka and made wine at Caldwell. Scalon makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, a red blend and a Russian River Pinot Noir.

The tasting room is in the Sawyer Tannery complex on Coombs Street in Napa, and it opens by appointment only. The partners describe each visit as special to them, and the room is small and personal. It is a good stop for guests who like a story of people who built a winery from the vineyard rows up.

Tasting Fees

Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. Scalon does not publish a tasting fee.
