In 1932, Italian immigrants Giovanni and Emma Salvestrin bought part of Dr. George Belden Crane's historic ranch in St. Helena, a vineyard planted in 1859. For decades the family sold its grapes to the Napa Valley Co-Op. Their son Ed farmed the vines, and in the early 1990s he and his wife Susanne restored the original Crane house.
Their son Rich made the first Salvestrin wine, a 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon, at Rombauer, and in 2001 Rich and Shannon Salvestrin built the estate winery on the ranch. Three generations of the family work here today. The restored Crane home is also The Inn at Salvestrin, with three guest rooms.
The Estate Tasting starts with Sauvignon Blanc and a tour of the estate and winery, then a seated tasting on the patio or in the tasting room, and it welcomes children and pets. The Dr. Crane Experience is held in the dining room of Crane's 1800s Victorian home, with five reds and small bites. The estate is in the St. Helena AVA, on Highway 29 at the south edge of town.
$75 for the Estate Tasting: Sauvignon Blanc on arrival, a tour of the estate and winery, and a seated tasting of four current releases. $150 for the Dr. Crane Experience, five red wines with small bites in Dr. Crane's Victorian home, 1.5 to 2 hours.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
