About the Winery

A Chicago family founded Sabina Vineyards in 2002, choosing a property in the foothills of the Mayacamas Range on the west side of St. Helena and replanting the hillside vineyard. The winery is named for the founder's mother, Sabina Sabin, and the S on every label comes from the back stamp of the Sabin China Company, which his father, Sam Sabin, started in western Pennsylvania almost a century ago.

Just over three acres of estate vines, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, grow on rocky red volcanic soils on the western benchlands of the St. Helena AVA, farmed organically around the family home and its old olive trees. The house was designed with the winery as its foundation: barrels, a small lab and a tasting space sit on the lower level. Alejandro Alfaro is the winemaker.

Sabina is not open to the public. The family holds a limited number of private tastings on the property, always hosted by a family member or family friend. That is the appeal: you are a guest in a lived-in family estate, tasting a few feet from the barrels, not standing at a bar.

Tasting Fees

Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. Sabina does not publish a tasting fee.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Harvest Inn or Wydown Hotel. Sabina sets visit times with the family, so the start may move.

10:00 · Pickup at Harvest Inn or Wydown Hotel

Harvest Inn, in gardens on Highway 29, and the Wydown Hotel, on Main Street in St. Helena, are each about 8 to 10 minutes from Sabina. If the family offers a different time, we build the day around it. The day runs about six and a quarter hours, and extra time is added by the hour.

10:15 · Sabina Vineyards

A private tasting with the family in the cellar beneath the house. The length of visit is not published, so we allow about an hour.

11:35 · Vineyard 7 & 8

About 20 minutes away. A family estate high on Spring Mountain, where the Estate Tasting starts with a tour and the story of the property before a seated tasting of current and library wines. It is $175 (allow about 90 minutes), refunded with each three-bottle Cabernet purchase. By appointment, Monday to Saturday, prepaid.

1:20 · Lunch at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch

About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch at the south end of St. Helena, a farm-to-table restaurant open daily for lunch from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:40 · Mathew Bruno

About 10 minutes away. A Rutherford estate around an 1890s house once called the finest in Rutherford, with a wraparound porch, a lavender garden and a bocce court over the Star Vineyard. The Rutherford Estate tasting of two whites and two reds is $75, 60 to 90 minutes. By reservation, Tuesday to Sunday.

4:00 · Back to your hotel

Back at your hotel by about 4:15 p.m.

About $250 per person in tasting fees for Vineyard 7 & 8 and Mathew Bruno, plus Sabina's fee, which is confirmed with the visit; each paid directly to the winery.

Vineyard 7 & 8 hosts Monday to Saturday and Mathew Bruno Tuesday to Sunday, so this day suits Tuesday to Saturday. It runs about six and a quarter hours. Sabina schedules visits around the family, so ask well ahead.
