Quivet Cellars

About the Winery

Quivet Cellars is named for Quivet Neck, a corner of Dennis on the bay side of Cape Cod, settled in 1637 and later known for its salt works and clipper ships; several of the founders have family ties there. The winemaker and a partner is Mike Smith, who started as assistant winemaker to Thomas Rivers Brown on wines for Maybach Family, Outpost and Rivers-Marie, then went out on his own in 2006.

The focus is single-vineyard wines from what Quivet calls premium undiscovered sites. Sources include McGah Family Vineyards on the Rutherford bench and the Pellet Vineyard, the original homestead of Henry Pellet near Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, with Syrah from Las Madres in Carneros. Recent releases include a Beckstoffer Las Piedras Cabernet and a Beckstoffer Las Amigas Merlot. Quivet is custom crushed at Tench Winery in Oakville.

Quivet sells to its mailing list members, with a concierge service on its website. There is no tasting room and no visiting program, so Quivet does not receive visitors. Since Mike Smith also makes his own Myriad Cellars wines, which do host, the day below starts there and continues to Rutherford.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Harvest Inn or Rancho Caymus Inn.

10:00 · Pickup at Harvest Inn or Rancho Caymus Inn

Since Quivet does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, starting with the label of Quivet's own winemaker. Harvest Inn, a garden hotel at the south end of St. Helena, and Rancho Caymus Inn, at the Rutherford crossroads, are each about 10 to 15 minutes from the first stop. The day runs about six and a half hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Myriad Cellars

About 12 minutes away. Winemaker Mike Smith's own label of Cabernet from Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, To Kalon and Georges III, poured at Brasswood north of St. Helena. Tastings are $125, about 90 minutes, usually four to six wines. By appointment, with priority for mailing list members; we arrange it on your behalf.

12:05 · William Perry Winery

About 15 minutes away. A small family estate on the Silverado Trail in Rutherford pouring small-lot Rutherford Cabernet and Cabernet Franc. The William Perry Experience is $85, about 90 minutes. By reservation, daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

1:50 · Lunch at The Charter Oak

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at The Charter Oak in St. Helena, a sit-down restaurant cooking over an open hearth, open daily from 11:30 a.m. (brunch from 11 a.m. on weekends). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:15 · Martin Estate

About 12 minutes away. A stone château built in 1887 as the H.H. Harris Wine Cellar on the Rutherford benchland, dormant for 115 years until the Martin family planted its first vines in 1996. By prior appointment only, with priority for club and mailing list members; the fee is confirmed when we book. We allow about an hour.

4:15 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:30 p.m., about six and a half hours after pickup.

About $210 per person for Myriad ($125, waived with purchase) and William Perry ($85), paid directly to each winery, plus the Martin Estate fee, confirmed when we book.

Myriad and Martin Estate give priority to their mailing list members and set times by appointment, so we confirm both before the day is set. The day runs about six and a half hours; extra time is billed by the hour.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
