About the Winery

Steve and Jennifer McPherson started Promise as a commitment made on the eve of their wedding: to pursue a passion and a more balanced life. The family has grown wine since 2004, and the wines carry names that fit the story, from the gratitude, a red blend, to the faith, a Sauvignon Blanc, and the love, a Pinot Noir.

Home is a 100-acre ranch on Pritchard Hill, on the east side of Napa Valley, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Kirk Venge makes the wine, and Brittany Pederson leads the viticulture. The ranch is a working farm too: heritage hogs for prosciutto and charcuterie, Blue Foot chickens, rescue horses that roam the pastures, more than 100 beehives and an organic garden for the Promise Provisions honey and jams.

Promise is not open to the public. The ranch is a private retreat for members, who get ranch experiences, culinary events and gifts during visits; membership starts with a three-bottle allocation. Promise describes a visit as a chance to wander the vineyards, feed the heritage hogs and take in the views, and we can ask the team on your behalf.

Tasting Fees

Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. Promise does not publish a visit fee; ranch experiences are offered to members.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Rancho Caymus Inn. Promise sets member visits on request, so the start may move.

10:00 · Pickup at Meadowood or Rancho Caymus Inn

Meadowood, at the foot of Howell Mountain, and Rancho Caymus Inn in Rutherford are each about 15 to 20 minutes from the ranch on Pritchard Hill. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours with a later lunch, and extra time is added by the hour.

10:20 · Promise Wine

A ranch visit for members, if the team can host you. The length is not published, so we allow about an hour and a quarter.

11:50 · David Arthur Vineyards

About 10 minutes away. A family estate high on Pritchard Hill, farmed organically since 1986, reached by a winding road up from the Silverado Trail. The estate tasting is $150, about 90 minutes. By reservation only.

1:35 · Lunch at Auberge du Soleil

About 20 minutes away. Lunch high on Rutherford Hill with the whole valley below. The Bar serves all day from 11:30 a.m., and The Restaurant on the terrace offers a two- or three-course prix fixe lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:00 · Sequoia Grove

About 12 minutes away. Rutherford Cabernet poured in the estate gardens or the historic barn where the winery opened in 1979, beneath a grove of sequoia trees. The Single Vineyard Experience is $75 ($100 with paired bites), and tastings last about 90 minutes. Reservations required; closed Tuesdays.

4:30 · Back to your hotel

Back at your hotel by about 4:45 p.m.

About $225 per person in tasting fees for David Arthur and Sequoia Grove, plus any Promise fee, which is confirmed with the visit; each paid directly to the winery.

Promise hosts members, so the day depends on the team accepting the request. It runs about six and three-quarter hours, with lunch at 1:35. Sequoia Grove is closed Tuesday.
