About the Winery

The land at Sequoia Grove was part of the 1836 Rancho Caymus land grant to George Yount. James and Barbara Allen bought the property in 1978, and the next year they opened a winery in an old barn beneath a grove of Sequoia trees, which gave the winery its name.

The winery farms a 24-acre estate vineyard around the barn and the 50-acre Tonella Estate Vineyard, both in Rutherford, and owns nearly 100 acres of vines in all. Cabernet Sauvignon is the focus, from the Rutherford Bench Reserve and single-vineyard bottlings to Cambium, the flagship red blend. The winery is certified Napa Green.

This is one of the most relaxed settings on Highway 29. Tastings are poured in the historic barn or on shaded patios beneath the redwoods, and the team leans into food: Winery Chef Bryce Palmer cooks the small bites for Wines + Bites and the multi-course A Taste for Cabernet. Every tasting is seated and runs about 90 minutes, so we build the day around that.

Tasting Fees

$60 for the Taste of Sequoia Grove, four estate wines. $75 for the Single Vineyard Experience ($100 with paired bites). $85 for Wines + Bites, four reds with small bites from the winery chef. $175 for A Taste for Cabernet, a multi-course wine and food pairing (also offered at dusk in the Cambium Room). Tastings last about 90 minutes.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
