About the Winery

William "Bill" Hill came to Napa in 1974 to develop his first vineyard, after an MBA at Stanford. Since then he has designed more than 50 vineyards in California, Oregon and Washington and founded several wine brands, including William Hill Winery. Today his family makes Prime Solum, Expression 38° and Tetra, and pours them at their own tasting barn.

Bill's view is simple: the vineyard is the main reason a wine is good. Prime Solum showcases the family's Brokenrock Vineyard and a few other Napa sites for Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. He makes the wines with Patrick, a winemaker who spent 24 years at Robert Mondavi Winery, ending as vice president of global wine quality.

Bill's daughter Elana Hill, a painter whose work is on the labels and the walls, opened the Napa Valley Tasting Barn in 2018 with her husband, David Ahlm, a Swedish-trained chef. Guests order flights and food on a covered patio, in two tasting cabanas or indoors, all heated. It sits on Atlas Peak Road beside Silverado Resort, away from the Highway 29 traffic.

Tasting Fees

$35 per person for a wine tasting flight (1 to 6 guests). $50 per person for the large group tasting (7 to 12 guests). Food is ordered separately.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
