About the Winery
Geneviève and Luc Janssens founded Portfolio Limited Edition in 1998 to make one harmonious wine together. Geneviève, born to a French vintner family, came to Robert Mondavi Winery in 1979, was director of production at Opus One from 1989 and later led winemaking at Robert Mondavi for many years. Wine Enthusiast named her Winemaker of the Year in 2010. Luc, a Belgian-born printmaker, studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.
The wine is a Napa Valley red from Bordeaux varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Block 8 of Hendry Ranch Vineyard in southwest Napa, old vines planted in 1974 on stony stream terraces. Cabernet Franc comes from the Detert East Vineyard in west Oakville, planted in the 1970s and believed to be the valley's oldest Cabernet Franc site. Yields are kept to three tons an acre or less.
The small winery runs on gravity, and the winery says Portfolio is never touched by a pump; Geneviève and Luc handle every step from crushing to shipping. Current releases, the 2019 and 2022, are $175 a bottle on the website, with library vintages and a mailing list. The wine supports the Lao Rehabilitation Foundation, which Luc founded. There is no tasting room, so Portfolio does not receive visitors. The day below starts at Hendry Ranch, where its Cabernet grows.

Archer Hotel Napa and Andaz Napa are in downtown Napa, about 12 minutes from the first stop. The day fits about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

About 15 minutes away. A small Hoffman Lane winery making vineyard-designate Zinfandel and Cabernet since 1985, poured in a casual, intimate room south of Yountville. Tastings are $75 and up; we plan about an hour. By appointment.

About 12 minutes away. The Cunat family's Oak Knoll winery, known for a Japanese Series made to pair with Japanese food. The Tour and Tasting is $60, at least 90 minutes. By reservation; last tasting at 4 p.m.
