Pope Valley · Napa Valley
A family-run estate from 1897 on the quiet far side of Howell Mountain, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.
Book a Six-Hour Wine Tour
Pope Valley Winery opened in 1897 as the Burgundy Winery & Olive Oil Factory for Pope Valley. A century later, in 1997, the Eakle family took ownership, and David and Diana Eakle, who grew up at the winery, have run it since 2017. The family's roots are in farming and construction, and their vineyard management company farms the vines, so the family carries the wine from vineyard to cellar.
The estate keeps its pre-Prohibition buildings: the original three-story gravity-flow winery, a hand-dug cave, a blacksmith shop and the old farmhouse. Pope Valley lies over Howell Mountain on the valley's quieter east side, outside any sub-appellation, so the wines carry the Napa Valley AVA. The winery calls it the other side of Napa. Current releases include Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Sangiovese.
Visits are by reservation, mainly Friday through Monday. The Vineyard View Experience is a hosted flight of current releases with the story of the land and the family. Depending on the weather, it may be poured on the patio, around a barrel in the cellar or indoors. The booking form asks whether you would like to stay for a picnic afterward, weather permitting.
$35 for the Vineyard View Experience, a hosted flight of current releases, about 60 minutes. The fee is waived with the purchase of two bottles per guest.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pope Valley sits on the far side of Howell Mountain, so the first drive is the longest of the day, about 30 to 35 minutes. Alila Napa Valley is a Hyatt resort on Main Street in St. Helena, and Harvest Inn is a vineyard-side resort at the south end of town. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

About 20 minutes away. A Howell Mountain estate 1,850 feet above the valley floor, with a LEED Gold certified winery. The Current Release Tasting of Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon is $100 and about 60 minutes. By appointment; 21 and over only, and no pets.
About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch on Main Street in St. Helena, open daily from 11:30 a.m. (11 a.m. on weekends). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 12 minutes away. A small winery on the Silverado Trail at the foot of Howell Mountain, named for Robert Frost's poem, where Thomas Rivers Brown makes the wines. The Estate Tasting of current releases is $85 and runs 60 to 90 minutes. By appointment.
