About the Winery

Philip Togni studied under Emile Peynaud at the University of Bordeaux, earning the Diplôme National d'Oenologie while assistant régisseur at Château Lascombes, and came to Napa Valley in 1959. He and his wife, Birgitta, arrived on Spring Mountain in 1975 and began planting in 1981 on land first planted to vines at the end of the 19th century. Their first wines were made in 1983, and their daughter, Lisa, now shares the work and ownership.

The ten-acre vineyard sits at 2,000 feet near the top of Spring Mountain and is farmed by the family organically, without irrigation. There are two wines, all estate grown: the Philip Togni Vineyard Cabernet, a long-lived Margaux-style blend with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the more approachable Tanbark Hill Cabernet. The family holds back bottles to re-release at ten, twenty and thirty years, and Vinous gave both the 2023 and the 2015 re-release 98 points.

The wines are sold through an annual offer to the mailing list each fall. There is no tasting room, and the estate does not offer public tours or tastings, so for visitors the way in is the bottle. The day below visits sought-after estates nearby that do host, starting with one of Philip Togni's Spring Mountain neighbors.
