About the Winery
Perchance began by chance, as the name says. Three families, the Papadakis, Fear and Angelos families, came to Napa Valley for a 50th birthday with no plan to make wine. Over a tasting with friends Mike and Leah Smith, Mike mentioned that rows in Beckstoffer Georges III might be available. Mike offered to make the wine, and the families said yes. A monarch butterfly on a four-leaf clover became the logo.
The vineyard list is what collectors notice: Beckstoffer To Kalon and Georges III for Cabernet Sauvignon, old-vine Sauvignon Blanc planted in 1990 at Beckstoffer Melrose, and Chardonnay from Beckstoffer Carneros Lake. Mike Smith learned under Thomas Rivers Brown and has worked at Schrader, Rivers-Marie, Maybach and Outpost, and the winery credits his Cabernets with sixteen 100-point scores from Wine Advocate and Jeb Dunnuck.
There is no Perchance tasting room. The wines are poured at Tamber Bey Vineyards on Tubbs Lane, a working horse ranch north of Calistoga, in the Calistoga AVA. Guests sit for a private tasting surrounded by stables, with an intro glass of Champagne and current releases paired with cheeses, while a host walks through the wines. Guests who love horses tend to linger by the paddocks afterward.

11:45 · The Debate
About 15 minutes away. A downtown St. Helena salon where single-vineyard Cabernets from famous sites are poured side by side, a fitting follow-up to Perchance's Beckstoffer wines. The Collection Tasting is $75, about 90 minutes. By appointment, privately hosted.
1:25 · Lunch at Rutherford Grill
About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Rutherford Grill at the Rutherford crossroads, a sit-down grill open daily. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 15 minutes away. Danica Patrick's organic hillside Cabernet estate in the Crystal Springs of Napa Valley AVA, poured in a tasting lounge on Calistoga's Lincoln Avenue. Taste of Somnium is $80 for about 75 minutes. By appointment at 3:00 p.m.

Perchance sets each tasting time when the booking is confirmed, and Somnium seats at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., so we confirm both first and adjust the day around them. The day runs about six and a quarter hours.
