About the Winery

Former racing driver Danica Patrick fell for Napa Valley on a visit in 2006, when a morning tasting on a vineyard hilltop changed her view of wine. On a later trip she found a steep property up the switchbacks toward Howell Mountain and bought it in the spring of 2009. She named it Somnium, Latin for "dream", and she remains the proprietor today.

The estate climbs from 1,045 to 1,375 feet in the Crystal Springs of Napa Valley AVA, approved in 2024 as the valley's only all-hillside appellation. Six planted acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grow on rocky volcanic soils. The vineyard has been certified organic by CCOF since 2019, and winemaker Julien Fayard has led the wines since 2020.

The estate itself is not open for visits. Instead, Somnium pours in a tasting lounge on Lincoln Avenue in downtown Calistoga, which opened in 2023. Each visit is a seated, hosted tasting of about 75 minutes for up to 8 guests, either a tour of the current releases or a vertical of the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon with small bites.

Tasting Fees

$80 for Taste of Somnium, four current releases in about 75 minutes (waived with a three-bottle purchase). $100 for the Vertical Estate Cabernet, several vintages of Estate Cabernet Sauvignon with chef-curated bites, about 75 minutes (waived with a three-bottle Cabernet purchase).

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:45 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Solage or Indian Springs Calistoga. Somnium's first appointment of the day is at 10:00 a.m., so we start 15 minutes earlier than usual.

9:45 · Pickup at Solage or Indian Springs Calistoga

Stay close and the tasting starts right away. Solage, an Auberge resort with a spa and geothermal pools on the Silverado Trail, is about 5 minutes from Somnium, and Indian Springs Calistoga is just up Lincoln Avenue. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Somnium

Taste of Somnium, a seated tasting of four current releases in about 75 minutes ($80). The Vertical Estate Cabernet ($100) runs the same length, so the day stays on schedule.

11:30 · Tedeschi Family Winery

About 5 minutes away. A small family winery just north of downtown Calistoga, making about 2,000 cases a year, and dog and kid friendly. The Estate Tasting of at least four wines starts at $35 and runs 60 to 90 minutes; we plan on about an hour. By appointment, with seatings on the half hour; same-day appointments are welcome.

12:40 · Lunch at Sam's Social Club

About 5 minutes away. Lunch at Sam's Social Club at Indian Springs, with seasonal food and a patio; lunch runs Monday to Friday and brunch on weekends, both until 2:30 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:00 · Clos Pegase

About 10 minutes away. Founded in 1983 by Jan Shrem, with a winery designed by architect Michael Graves and sculpture throughout the grounds. The Signature Tasting is $50 and takes about 90 minutes. By reservation.

3:35 · Back to your hotel

Back by 3:45 p.m., six hours after pickup.

Optional: Kenefick Ranch

Adds about an hour. Kenefick Ranch pours its estate Calistoga wines at the Wine Train Collective in the historic Calistoga Depot, a short walk from Somnium. Walk-ins are welcome (weekends may need a reservation); tastings are $35, Friday to Monday, open until 6 p.m.

About $165 to $185 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Kenefick Ranch pours Friday to Monday only; on other days we suggest another walk-in Calistoga tasting room. Clos Pegase lists different open days in different places, so your chauffeur confirms it when booking.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
