The Kaufman family's vineyard at the base of Atlas Peak, farmed since 1982 and now all estate Cabernet, with vineyard tours by appointment, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Herb and Margaret Kaufman settled on Old Soda Springs Road at the base of Atlas Peak in 1974, running the land as a small ranch with horses, cattle and chickens. After the 1981 Atlas Fire, Herb, a physician, researcher and wine lover, planted Chardonnay in 1982 in collaboration with UC Davis. Silverado Summers Vineyard sold fruit to wineries around the valley and became a firebreak around the homestead. Their children run the winery today.
After Herb's death in 2006 the vineyard rested, and in 2016 the family replanted it to Cabernet Sauvignon, turning the rows to catch the afternoon sun. Two blocks named for the third generation make two wines: Eva on the valley floor and Jonas on a gentle hillside of the Silverado Bench. Everything is estate grown and bottled on site, made by Ashley Hepworth, who spent 15 years as winemaker at Joseph Phelps, where she oversaw Insignia.
There is no tasting room. Vineyard tours are by appointment only, requested by email, so a visit is a small, personal walk through the family's vines rather than a bar tasting. Decanter gave the 2023 Eva's Block 93 points. We send the request with your dates and build the day around the time the family offers.
Old Soda Springs does not publish a tour or tasting fee. Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
