About the Winery

Dan and Kim Johnson turned an overgrown walnut orchard into a vineyard in 2006, with the help of vineyard manager Mike Nuñez, and launched Okapi seven years later with the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon. Dan first came to wine country after meeting Dick Arrowood, then winemaker at Chateau St. Jean, while working as a young lawyer.

The vineyard, Jungle Love, is in the Oak Knoll District, which the family calls the sweet spot of the valley between cool Carneros and the heat further north. Winemaker Ted Osborne makes the wines with Jon Jones. The name honors the okapi, a shy relative of the giraffe from central Africa, and the winery supports the Okapi Wildlife Reserve in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Okapi tastings are by appointment, with priority given to Okapi Club members and returning customers. We send the request on your behalf and confirm where the tasting is hosted and any fee before your day. The family also offers virtual tastings and private tastings at home.

Tasting Fees

Okapi does not publish a tasting fee. Any fee is confirmed by the winery when the appointment is set.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
