About the Winery
Mumm Napa traces its roots to G.H. Mumm, the Champagne house founded in Reims in 1827. Between 1976 and 1979 the house sent winemaker Guy Devaux to find the right place in the United States to grow traditional Champagne grapes. The first wine was made in 1983 under the name Domaine Mumm, and in 1990 the winery became Mumm Napa and opened to the public.
Everything here is made by méthode traditionnelle, the French way, with the second fermentation in the bottle. The estate vineyard, Devaux Ranch, was planted in Carneros in 1991 and is named for the founding winemaker. Tami Lotz became Mumm Napa's first female winemaker in 2020, and the range runs from Brut Rosé to the DVX tête de cuvée.
The visit is all about the view. The winery sits on the Silverado Trail in Rutherford, and guests taste on a wide patio or in a climate-controlled room looking across the vines to the Mayacamas Mountains. Most of our guests choose a flight at Sip & Sparkle; the Oak Terrace Heritage Tasting adds cheeses picked by the winemaker, and a private tour shows how sparkling wine is made.
Tasting Fees
From $48 for Sip & Sparkle, a choice of three flights of four sparkling wines, 60 minutes. $55 for Discover Your Sparkle (60 minutes, Sunday to Friday) and $60 for the Vineside Tasting among the vines (weekends, May to October). $75 for the Mystery Tasting, a blind tasting challenge (75 minutes, Sunday to Friday, booked by phone). $85 for the Oak Terrace Heritage Tasting with artisan cheeses, 75 minutes. $125 for the Capture the Sparkle Private Tour & Tasting, 120 minutes.

Good to Know

Both hotels are a few minutes from the winery. Auberge du Soleil, the hillside resort above the Silverado Trail, is about 5 minutes from Mumm Napa, and Rancho Caymus Inn in the village of Rutherford is about 8 minutes away. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

Sip & Sparkle on the patio, about an hour (from $48). The Oak Terrace Heritage Tasting ($85) runs 75 minutes and moves the rest of the day back 15 minutes.
11:30 · Chappellet Winery
About 15 minutes away. Up on Pritchard Hill, the family's pyramid-roofed winery is the one Hugh Johnson called the most remarkable wine cathedral in the modern world, and guests love the vineyard views on the way up. The Pinnacle of Pritchard Hill Tour & Tasting is $125 for 90 minutes. By reservation, daily; 21 and over.

About 15 minutes away. Lunch high on Rutherford Hill with the whole valley below. The Bar serves all day from 11:30 a.m., and The Restaurant on the terrace offers a two- or three-course prix fixe lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
2:30 · Groth Vineyards & Winery
About 15 minutes away. The Groth family's Oakville estate, home of Napa's first 100-point Cabernet, where we like to arrive a few minutes early so you can stroll the insectary garden. Oakville Roots, a seated tasting built around the Oakcross blend, is $75 for about 60 minutes. By appointment, seven days a week; 21 and over.
