Weston Eidson founded Montagu Wines in 2012 and named it for his family history. His great-grandfather John, the second Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, was a British automotive pioneer, and John's son Edward, the third Lord, founded Britain's National Motor Museum and grew wine from his own vineyard in southern England. Weston also makes a sister label, Silver Ghost Cellars.
From the beginning, Montagu has focused on extremely limited production. Weston learned from mentors Jason Moore and Russell Bevan and aims for wines that are richly layered, complex and balanced. The grapes come from vineyards in Napa Valley and Sonoma, and the winery describes each wine as an expression of the place it comes from.
Montagu has no tasting room and lists no visits. It sells through its website and wine club, and its newsletter announces tastings in your area, so the easiest way to taste is to sign up and watch for one. Since Montagu does not host, the day below takes you to three sought-after estates around St. Helena that do.
Montagu does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Alila Napa Valley, at the north end of St. Helena, and Southbridge Napa Valley, at the south end of town, are each about 10 minutes from the first stop. The day runs about six and a half hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 10 minutes away. A small, organically farmed family estate on the St. Helena benchland, where a short walk through the winery and vines ends in a tasting salon filled with the family's art collection. The Estate Tasting is $125, about 90 minutes. By appointment, prepaid on Tock, with times daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
About 12 minutes away. Lunch at Forum, the main restaurant at Meadowood at the foot of Howell Mountain, with seasonal dishes drawn from the Meadowood farm. Lunch is served on weekdays, with brunch on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 12 minutes away. Winemaker Rosemary Cakebread's organically farmed estate against the Mayacamas near Sulphur Creek, with a contemporary barn among the vines and single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The Estate Tasting of five current releases is $90, about 75 minutes. By appointment, Monday to Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (1 p.m. on Saturday), booked at least 72 hours ahead.
About 12 minutes away. Philippe and Cherie Melka's small estate on the Silverado Trail, with a 1982 farm barn that holds a library of about 3,000 bottles. Meet Melka is $75, 45 minutes in the loft with valley views, waived with a wine purchase. By appointment, requested by phone or email.
Back by about 4:30 p.m., about six and a half hours after pickup.
About $290 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Gallica's 2 p.m. tasting runs Monday to Friday (1 p.m. on Saturday), and Forum serves lunch on weekdays, so this day suits a weekday. Back by about 4:30 p.m.
