About the Winery

Michael Mondavi's grandparents, Cesare and Rosa, came from Sassoferrato, Italy, and the family bought the Charles Krug winery in 1943. In 1966 Michael and his father, Robert, founded Robert Mondavi Winery. In 1999 Michael, his wife Isabel and their children Dina and Rob Mondavi Jr. started Michael Mondavi Family wines, a family portfolio of small-production wines.

Rob Mondavi Jr. joined the winemaking team in 2004 and has led it since 2012. The flagship is M by Michael Mondavi Family, alongside Animo, Italian for soul, and the Emblem varietal wines. Animo Vineyard climbs from 1,270 to 1,350 feet on the slope of Atlas Peak, and Oso Vineyard, between Ink Grade and Howell Mountain, includes a Sauvignon Blanc block traced to Château d'Yquem cuttings.

The wines are sold through the family's website, its seasonal wine club and select restaurants and shops. The family's office is in Napa, and the company publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below takes you to three estates on Mount Veeder, in Yountville and on the Silverado Trail that do.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Silverado Resort or Milliken Creek Inn.

10:00 · Pickup at Silverado Resort or Milliken Creek Inn

Since Michael Mondavi Family Estate does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Silverado Resort, a golf and spa resort at the foot of Atlas Peak, and Milliken Creek Inn, an inn on the Napa River just off the Silverado Trail, are each about 30 minutes from the first stop on Mount Veeder. The day runs about six and a half hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:30 · Mt. Brave

About 30 minutes away. The Mt. Veeder Experience climbs to about 2,000 feet, starting at the Mt. Brave Overlook among redwoods, oaks and madrones, then moves to a private seated tasting of organically farmed mountain wines. $175, 90 minutes or more, for 2 to 6 guests; the meeting point is confirmed with the booking.

12:25 · Lunch at Brix

About 25 minutes away. Lunch at Brix on Highway 29 near Yountville, a sit-down restaurant beside its own gardens and vineyard, serving lunch from 11:30 a.m. (closed Tuesday). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:40 · Stewart Cellars

About 8 minutes away. A family-owned winery on Washington Street in Yountville whose NOMAD Cabernets come from Beckstoffer's Heritage Vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon Tasting of four single-vineyard Cabernets is $85, about an hour. Open daily 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; reservations advised.

2:55 · Seven Apart

About 15 minutes away. A Cabernet house with a mountaintop vineyard on Atlas Peak, hosting a tour of its Base Camp on the Silverado Trail and a seated tasting of the estate Cabernets with paired cheeses, about 90 minutes. By reservation, mainly for allocation members; the fee is confirmed when we book.

4:25 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:35 p.m., about six and a half hours after pickup.

About $260 per person for Mt. Brave and Stewart Cellars, plus Seven Apart's fee, which is confirmed when the visit is booked.

Seven Apart hosts mainly allocation members, so we send the request early and suggest another Silverado Trail estate if needed. Brix is closed on Tuesday. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
