About the Winery
Tracey and John Skupny founded Lang & Reed in 1993 and named it after their two sons, J Reed and Jerzy Lang. They started out as restaurant sommeliers in Kansas City, came west to California wine country in 1980 and settled in Napa Valley in 1984. The winery is still family owned and run, and the Skupnys share the wines and their story at their own tasting salon.
Lang & Reed was one of the first wineries in Napa Valley to spotlight Cabernet Franc on its own, at a time when the grape was mostly used for blending, inspired by the reds of the Loire Valley and Right Bank Bordeaux. Chenin Blanc followed. The family works with growers in Napa Valley, Alexander Valley and Lake County for Cabernet Franc, and Mendocino for Chenin Blanc, aiming for wines praised for balance and restraint.
The Spring House tasting salon is in the heart of downtown St. Helena. Seated tastings are poured on the front porch, in a cozy living room or in the outdoor wine garden, with dried fruits and nuts chosen by the winemaker. The Monograph Tasting reaches into the library for the rarest Cabernet Franc bottlings, such as the 2013 T-bar-T.
