About the Winery
Pat and Anne Stotesbery founded Ladera in 1998, and the family still owns it, a point it makes with pride next to "large corporate owned businesses." Jade Barrett is the winemaker. Ladera is best known for its limited-production Howell Mountain Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside a Napa Valley Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
After selling its Howell Mountain property, the family bought a hillside site on the Silverado Trail between St. Helena and Calistoga in 2019, with plans for a cave winery, new vineyards and a hospitality building. The property has an intimate tasting space with outdoor seating, and Ladera's programs for its customers run from a portfolio tasting to a lobster lunch.
Ladera has since changed course: it "is no longer open for public tastings." Visits are now by inquiry for existing customers and wine club members only, and the winery says it cannot accommodate requests from the general public. Since Ladera does not host the general public, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, starting on Howell Mountain, where Ladera's best-known wine comes from. Meadowood, a resort in its own valley at the foot of the mountain, is about 20 minutes from the first stop, and Alila Napa Valley, a Hyatt resort in downtown St. Helena, about 25 minutes. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
10:30 · Outpost Wines
About 20 to 25 minutes away. A Howell Mountain estate above the fog, on a vineyard first planted in the 1860s. The seated estate tasting is $75, at 2,200 feet, and the 10:30 a.m. seating is one of only three each day; we allow about 75 minutes. By appointment, typically Tuesday through Saturday.

About 20 minutes away. Lunch at Forum, the main restaurant at Meadowood at the foot of Howell Mountain, with seasonal dishes drawn from the Meadowood farm. Lunch is served on weekdays, with brunch on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 10 minutes away. A small, family-owned Silverado Trail winery from winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown and his partners. The Estate Tasting of current releases is $85, 60 to 90 minutes. By appointment only.

About 12 minutes away. A small, organically farmed family estate in St. Helena, where a short walking tour leads to a seated tasting in a salon filled with the family's art collection. The Estate Tasting is $125, about 90 minutes, prepaid on Tock, with times until 4 p.m. By appointment only.
