About the Winery

Maayan Koschitzky, Miguel Luna and Pete Richmond founded La Pelle in 2016. Maayan is a winemaker and farmer from Israel, Miguel a viticulturist and winemaker from Mexico, and Pete a vineyard manager who founded Silverado Farming Company in 2001; Miguel became a partner there in 2015. La Pelle is named for the shovel, a simple tool that, as the winery puts it, both the vineyard and the cellar have used for centuries.

Every grape comes from vineyards Silverado Farming tends, so the partners choose the sites, farm them and make the wine. In Napa Valley that means the Alluvium Vineyard in St. Helena, planted in 1981; an organic, dry-farmed Sauvignon Blanc block from 1982; Red Hen in the Oak Knoll District; an organic Oakville site; and Coombsville fruit. The Napa Valley Cabernet blends four of those appellations, and Bien Nacido in the Santa Maria Valley supplies a separate series.

The wines, now up to the 2024 Napa Valley Cabernet, are sold through the login and purchase portal on La Pelle's website. La Pelle publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. For a taste of the same southern Napa ground, the day below starts in a cave dug into the hills above the valley and takes in two family estates near Oak Knoll.

Tasting Fees

La Pelle does not offer tastings.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:40 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Silverado Resort or Milliken Creek Inn.

9:40 · Pickup at Silverado Resort or Milliken Creek Inn

Since La Pelle does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. We pick up a little early so you make the 10 a.m. cave seating. Silverado Resort, a golf and spa resort at the foot of Atlas Peak, is about 15 minutes from the first stop, and Milliken Creek Inn, a small riverside inn on the Silverado Trail, about 15 minutes. The day runs about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Greater Fool Wine

About 15 minutes away. A small co-fermented Napa label poured in The Caves at Soda Canyon, an underground winery with a terrace looking down the valley. The cave tour and tasting of four wines plus a barrel sample is $50, about 90 minutes. By appointment, with seatings at 10 a.m., 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.

11:45 · Rockmere Vineyards

About 10 minutes away. A small family vineyard on the Silverado Trail with wines by Jeff Ames, where the private visit starts with a walk through the caves where the wines are made and barrel samples of aging vintages, then a formal tasting. $75 per person; we allow about 75 minutes. By appointment through a Rockmere account; we arrange it on your behalf.

1:15 · Lunch at Bistro Don Giovanni

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Bistro Don Giovanni, an Italian restaurant among the vineyards on Howard Lane, a valley favorite for more than 30 years, open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:30 · Backstage Winery

About 8 minutes away. An Oak Knoll District estate on Big Ranch Road with a seated Estate Tasting of five wines from $45, and an ATV Vineyard Education Tour through the vines ($140, about 90 minutes) at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. Open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations required on Tock.

3:30 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 3:45 p.m., about six hours after pickup.

About $170 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Greater Fool seats guests only at 10 a.m., 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., so the day starts with the first seating. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
