John and Cyndi Kasten moved to Napa in 1989, joined a wine tasting group and began making wine at home in 1993 with friends from it. That venture, Leap of Faith Vintners, won awards in local competitions. In 1999 the Kastens bought a small property on the valley floor and took viticulture classes at Napa Valley College before planting.
Their two-acre vineyard in the Oak Knoll District was planted in 2003 to Cabernet Sauvignon, half Clone 47 and half FPS 30.1, on Bale clay loam, and is farmed by Doug Hill of Oak Knoll Farming. The Kastens keep production small, at most 500 cases, sell about half their grapes to other winemakers, and blend in Merlot and Cabernet Franc from neighbors.
This is a visit to a family's own place: the vineyard and the people who planted it. Visits are by appointment only, and the Kastens invite guests to contact them about a vineyard experience. Alongside the red blends they make a Carneros Chardonnay and a rosé from the estate Cabernet, some in lots as small as 20 cases.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Wines are sold mainly to wine club members (four bottles three times a year) and by direct sale. Fees, hours, age and pet policies are not published.
Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Milliken Creek Inn or Silverado Resort.
Milliken Creek Inn, an inn on the Napa River just off the Silverado Trail, is about 8 minutes from the estate, and Silverado Resort, a golf and spa resort at the foot of Atlas Peak, about 12 minutes away. The day below fits about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
A visit with the family at the vineyard, by appointment; the format and any fee are confirmed when it is set. We plan about 75 minutes.
About 20 minutes away. A members-focused estate at 1,700 feet on Atlas Peak that hosts small groups by invitation for long, unhurried visits. We send the request on your behalf and plan about 90 minutes; any fee is confirmed when the estate accepts.
About 25 minutes away. Lunch at Oenotri on First Street in downtown Napa, an Italian restaurant serving lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 12 minutes away. Aaron Pott's small Cabernet vineyard near the Knights Valley line, with whites aged in Tuscan amphorae, poured at the Latour Court tasting room in south Napa. The Perliss Estate Tasting is $80 to $110 depending on the flight; we allow about an hour. By reservation for parties of 1 to 8.
Back by about 4:15 p.m., a little over six hours after pickup.
About $80 to $110 per person for Perliss Estate, plus the fees for Kasten and Sommras, which are confirmed when the visits are set.
Kasten and Sommras both confirm visits personally, so we send requests early. If Sommras cannot host, we suggest another Atlas Peak estate. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.
