About the Winery

Ketan Mody came to wine after art school, boatbuilding and a career in finance. He worked a vintage in New Zealand in 2007 and then at Harlan Estate before buying a 60-acre ranch on Diamond Mountain in 2008. He named it Jasud after his paternal grandmother. His other label, Beta, which means child in Hindi, explores vineyards in Napa and Sonoma counties.

The vineyard sits at about 1,650 to 2,000 feet in the Diamond Mountain District and faces mostly north, much cooler than the valley floor. Permits took years; clearing began in 2013, the first vines went in in 2016, and the 2019 harvest filled two barrels. The 2020 Glass Fire destroyed the buildings and about 40% of the vines. The 15 acres are dry-farmed and densely planted, part of them on their own roots.

Jasud and Beta are sold through a mailing list, and Jancis Robinson reported that Beta releases sell out within a day. Jasud Estate is Mody's home ranch, and the website offers only the mailing list and a contact email; there are no tastings or visits. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do welcome guests.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:50 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Indian Springs or Four Seasons Napa Valley.

9:50 · Pickup at Indian Springs or Four Seasons Napa Valley

Since Jasud Estate does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. We pick up at 9:50 for Somnium's 10 a.m. tasting: Indian Springs, the historic hot springs resort on Lincoln Avenue, is a few minutes away, and Four Seasons Napa Valley, on the Silverado Trail in Calistoga, about 8 minutes. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Somnium

A few minutes away. Racing driver Danica Patrick's organic hillside Cabernet estate, poured in a tasting lounge on Calistoga's Lincoln Avenue. The Vertical Estate Cabernet tasting is $100, several vintages of the estate Cabernet Sauvignon with chef-curated bites, about 75 minutes (Taste of Somnium, four current releases, is $80). By appointment, with tastings at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

11:30 · Diamond Creek Vineyards

About 10 minutes away. One of Diamond Mountain's founding estates, with four single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons made since 1968. The Signature Tasting ($250) is a private seated tasting followed by a guided UTV tour of the estate, about 90 minutes. By private appointment, requested ahead; mailing list members get priority.

1:20 · Lunch at Cook St. Helena

About 20 minutes away. Northern Italian cooking at Cook St. Helena on Main Street, a small local favorite open for lunch Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:45 · RARECAT Wines

About 20 minutes north. A small, woman-owned winery making Champagne, Bordeaux and Napa Valley wines, with a private seated tasting of five wines led by a wine educator ($85). The winery describes the visit as unhurried, lasting a few hours; we plan about an hour and a half. By appointment only, booked by email or online.

4:15 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:30 p.m., about six and three-quarter hours after pickup.

About $415 to $435 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Cook serves lunch Monday to Friday, so this day fits a weekday. Somnium does not publish its open days, so we confirm the 10 a.m. tasting when we book. RARECAT visits can run long; back by about 4:30 p.m., later if you linger.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
