About the Winery

In Vino Felicitas ("in wine there is happiness") is the umbrella for the wines of Anna and Mario Monticelli, both UC Davis-trained winemakers. Anna worked the 2000 vintage at Château Cheval Blanc, then spent two years at Seavey Vineyard and five at Bryant Family under Philippe Melka; since 2007 she has been the winemaker at Piña Napa Valley. Mario, from four generations of winemakers, worked for Melka, then at Quixote and for 13 years at Trinchero Napa Valley, and now consults.

In Napa Valley they make Tether, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay project with wine broker Kimberly Jones; Stack House, whose Napa Valley Cabernet Robert Parker named one of the top three value wines of 2016; No Brainer; and Brioche. The 2023 Tether Cabernet earned 93 points from Jeb Dunnuck. They also make wine in Piedmont, Tuscany, Abruzzo and Friuli, and in Champagne and the Rhône Valley.

The Monticellis sell through retail and restaurant partners rather than a tasting room, and their site lists no visiting program, so In Vino Felicitas does not receive visitors. The day below tastes at three Yountville and Oakville area estates of a similar spirit, small and family-run or winemaker-driven, that do host guests.

Tasting Fees

Since In Vino Felicitas does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Ghost Block's first tasting is at 10 a.m., about 10 minutes from either Yountville hotel, so pickup is a little early. The day fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Ghost Block Estate Wines

About 10 minutes away. The Pelissa family, farming in Napa Valley since 1903, pours its organically farmed Oakville and Yountville wines at the historic Napa Wine Company in Oakville. The Pelissa Vineyard Tour by open-air golf cart is $95; the seated Taste of Oakville and Yountville is $55, about 90 minutes. By reservation, with tastings at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

11:45 · Lewis Cellars

About 15 minutes away. A Stags Leap District estate on the Silverado Trail, founded by Randy Lewis, who raced in five Indianapolis 500s before turning to wine; its 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet was Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 2016. The Legacy Tasting is $80; we allow about an hour. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; reservations highly recommended, up to six guests per seating.

1:00 · Lunch at Mustards Grill

About 12 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill on Highway 29 just north of Yountville, a Napa Valley favorite for more than 40 years, open daily for lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:20 · Addax Wines

About 8 minutes away. Russell Bevan's bold Oakville Cabernet and coastal Pinot Noir, poured at HQ Winery, a working winery on Hoffman Lane just south of Yountville. Tastings are $75 to $200 depending on the experience; we plan about 75 minutes. By appointment, daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

3:35 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 3:45 p.m., six hours after pickup.

About $210 to $375 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. The fourth stop is there if the day allows.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
