About the Winery

III Rows ("three rows, three friends") belongs to Michael Casadaban of Baton Rouge, Clay Chandler of Lafayette and Rawleigh Fisher of Lake Charles, who became friends during their residencies at LSU and shared a dream of making wine. They produced their first vintage in 2013 with Napa Valley winemaker Kent Jarman, who grew up in South Louisiana, studied at UC Davis and worked at Duckhorn before Coup de Foudre.

Jarman buys fruit from select vineyard sources and makes the wines by custom crush in Napa: Cabernet Sauvignon, a red Bordeaux blend, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, the LINH Rosé, a non-vintage sparkling Brut Rosé and a Blanc de Blanc. Early sources included the Lewelling Vineyard in St. Helena, Circle R on Atlas Peak and Kenefick Ranch in Calistoga.

III Rows sells through inquiries on its website and pours at private dinners and wine festivals across Louisiana and the Florida Gulf Coast, along with an annual Napa Valley release event. It has no tasting room in Napa and publishes no visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below visits three St. Helena area estates that host, with mountain views and caves.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:40 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Harvest Inn or Alila Napa Valley.

9:40 · Pickup at Harvest Inn or Alila Napa Valley

Since III Rows does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Vineyard 7 & 8 starts its first tasting at 10 a.m., about 20 minutes up Spring Mountain from either hotel in St. Helena, so pickup is a little early. The day fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Vineyard 7 & 8

About 20 minutes away. A small family estate high on Spring Mountain, where a tour of the property comes before a seated tasting of current and library estate wines. The Estate Tasting is $175 (refunded with each three-bottle Cabernet purchase); we allow about 90 minutes. Prepaid, by appointment, Monday to Saturday, from 10 a.m.

11:50 · Del Dotto Estate Winery & Caves

About 20 minutes away. A St. Helena estate on Highway 29 whose visit leads into marble-lined caves for tastes drawn straight from the barrel. The Cave Experience and Barrel Tasting is $120 plus tax; the length is not published, so we allow about 75 minutes. By reservation; closed Wednesday.

1:20 · Lunch at Brasswood Bar + Kitchen

About 12 minutes away. Lunch at Brasswood Bar + Kitchen on Highway 29 north of St. Helena, with a patio and seasonal menus, open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:40 · VGS Chateau Potelle

About 15 minutes away. A small, French-owned winery pouring single-vineyard wines in a tasting house and garden on Dowdell Lane. A private Wine Tasting of six wines is $75; we allow about an hour. Open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. by reservation; 21 and over, no children.

3:45 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 3:55 p.m., about six and a quarter hours after pickup.

About $370 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Vineyard 7 & 8 hosts Monday to Saturday and Del Dotto is closed Wednesday, so plan this day for Monday, Tuesday or Thursday to Saturday. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
