About the Winery

Philippe Langner grew up on his family's farms in Zaire and Colombia, earned two master's degrees at UC Davis, and learned Bordeaux at Château Clarke in Listrac, working alongside Jacques Boissenot and Michel Rolland. He came back to California in 2001 and spent eight years as viticulturist and winemaker at Sullivan Vineyards in Rutherford before settling on Atlas Peak.

His home and life's work is Kitoko, a steep 14.2-acre vineyard planted to Cabernet Sauvignon in 2000 and 2003; the name is the Lingala word for beautiful. The soils are rocky andesite, the bay winds are constant, and yields run about 2 tons per acre. Langner farms it with one vineyard worker and bottles the wines unfined and unfiltered. Hesperian means one of the West.

Hesperian is sold through The List, a mailing list with three membership levels that ship wine twice a year and include invitations to Hesperian events in Napa Valley. The website offers no tastings or visits, and Kitoko is Langner's home and working vineyard. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do welcome guests.

9:40 · Pickup at Silverado Resort or Milliken Creek Inn

Since Hesperian does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. We start at 9:40 for Antinori's 10 a.m. tasting up Soda Canyon Road. Silverado Resort, a golf and spa resort at the foot of Atlas Peak, and Milliken Creek Inn, a small inn on the Napa River along the Silverado Trail, are each about 20 minutes from the estate. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Antinori Napa Valley

About 20 minutes away. The Antinori family's mountain estate high on Atlas Peak, the same mountain as Hesperian's vineyard. The Estate Experience is $125, a 90-minute private seated tasting of four wines with light bites and a visit to the caves. Tuesday to Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., by reservation request; the estate confirms by email.

11:45 · Hertelendy Vineyards

About 12 minutes away. An ultra-small mountain Cabernet house with Hungarian roots, tasted privately underground at The Caves at Soda Canyon. The Private Tasting with a tour of the caves is $95; we plan about an hour. Prepaid, by appointment; no same-day requests.

1:05 · Lunch at Angèle

About 20 minutes away. Lunch at Angèle, a French brasserie on the Napa River in downtown Napa, serving lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:35 · Jarvis Estate

About 20 minutes away. A winery built entirely inside 45,000 square feet of cave in the Vaca Mountains, with a stream and waterfall running through it. The Vintage Tour and Tasting is $150; we allow about 90 minutes. Daily by appointment; tours often fill weeks ahead.

4:05 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:25 p.m., about six and three-quarter hours after pickup.

About $370 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Antinori hosts Tuesday to Saturday, so this day works Tuesday to Saturday. Back by about 4:25 p.m.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
