Gratus Vineyards belongs to Thomas and Victoria Wargovich. Thomas, a retired interventional cardiologist with a degree in botany, found a 27-acre parcel of old ranch land in Pope Valley after a medical meeting brought him to Napa nearly 20 years ago. He took viticulture and enology courses at Napa Valley College, planted ten acres of Bordeaux and Rhône varieties, and with winemaker Robbie Meyer made a first vintage of 75 cases in 2012. Gratus is Latin for grateful.
The vines grow on a steep hillside along Pope Creek and are farmed organically, picked by hand in the early morning and sorted twice. The ranch is also a pinetum and arboretum with more than 300 species of conifers. Recent wines include a 2017 Petite Sirah and a 2018 White Rhône Blend.
There is no tasting room. The Napa Wine Project lists Gratus as private with no appointments, and on its own site the family asks Napa County to create a path for micro-producers like Gratus to offer limited tastings. Wines are sold online and through its clubs. The day below starts in the hills east of the valley at Green & Red and then comes down to Rutherford.
Gratus does not offer tastings. On the day below, fees run $60 at Green & Red, $40 at Honig and $75 at Rutherford Hill, paid to each winery.
Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Gratus does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates that do, starting in the hills between the valley and Pope Valley. The first stop is about 35 minutes from either hotel. The day runs about seven hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 35 minutes away. A family Zinfandel estate in the hills above Chiles Valley, named for its red chert and green serpentine soils. The Tasting and Winery/Vineyard Tour is $60, about 90 minutes, for parties of four or fewer. By appointment only.
About 35 minutes away. Lunch at Rutherford Grill on Highway 29, known for its wood-fired rotisserie. We confirm lunch hours when we book. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 5 minutes away. A family-run, solar-powered Rutherford winery. The seated Terrace Tasting is $40; we plan about an hour. By appointment.
About 10 minutes away. A hilltop winery above the Silverado Trail with a valley-view terrace and a mile of caves. View of the Valley, five wines on the terrace, is $75, about 90 minutes. Open until 5 p.m.; reservations highly recommended.
Back by about 5:00 p.m.
About $175 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Green & Red takes parties of four or fewer; for larger groups we call ahead. For a shorter day, end after Honig and be back by about 3:15 p.m.
