About the Winery
Mark Grassi moved to Napa Valley in 1980 and built one of the valley's best-known construction firms before returning to wine. He and Jami bought land on Soda Canyon Road in 1999, made their first wines in 2001 and released their first commercial vintage in 2005. Their daughter Cassandra, who joined full time in 2010, now runs the winery, and her husband Miguel Luna manages the vineyards.
The 14-acre property, three miles north of downtown Napa just off the Silverado Trail, sits south of the Stags Leap District on Coombs gravelly loam. About five acres are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Ribolla Gialla. Winemaker Maayan Koschitzky, who has worked at Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle, makes Cabernet, sparkling and still Ribolla Gialla and a celebrated Sangiovese. Wine Enthusiast named Miguel Luna its Viticulturist of the Year in 2020.
The family lives on the property with an olive grove, orchard, garden and chickens, and Grassi publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. Since Grassi does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Silverado Resort, at the foot of Atlas Peak, and Milliken Creek Inn, on the Napa River off the Silverado Trail, are each about 10 minutes from the first stop. The day fits about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

About 10 minutes away. A women-owned urban winery minutes from downtown Napa, with a stylish tasting room, a zen patio and single-vineyard wines by Kirk Venge. The 11:11 Experience is $75, a private seated tasting of about 75 minutes. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment on Tock.
11:45 · Whetstone Wine Cellars
About 8 minutes away. A family winery pouring single-vineyard wines by the fire in a restored 19th-century French-style chateau at the base of Atlas Peak Road. The Classic Tasting is $65 for four wines, 60 to 90 minutes. Open Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations recommended.

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Grace's Table on Second Street in downtown Napa, a sit-down local favorite open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
2:30 · Buoncristiani Family Winery
About 15 minutes away. Three Napa-born brothers pour their wines in The Caves at Soda Canyon, a fully underground winery with sweeping valley views. The Signature Tour & Tasting is $85 for five wines, about 90 minutes. Seatings at 10 a.m., 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., requested at least a week ahead.
