About the Winery

Dr. Lewis Gibbs Carpenter Jr., a lifelong farmer and psychologist, moved to St. Helena in the 1950s and grew walnuts, dates and a few grapes before replanting to Bordeaux varieties by the 1970s. His son-in-law Craig Handly, a label designer, began making wine from those grapes in 2000, in a tank kept in the family barn. After Lewis died in 2013, the family launched Gibbs Napa Valley in his honor.

Cross Creek Vineyard lies in the small valley between Howell Mountain and Glass Mountain off Crystal Springs Road, in the Crystal Springs of Napa Valley AVA, on land first planted with walnuts and prunes in the 1870s; three rows of the old walnut orchard still stand among the vines. Centa Vineyard sits at the valley's narrowest point on Lodi Lane. Craig and Susan's son Spencer Gibbs Handly is the third generation.

Gibbs has no public tasting room. Visits are by private request, and we arrange it on your behalf with the family; when they can host, it is a small, personal visit, and you may well meet Spencer. The family reports ducks, geese, a blue heron, hawks and the occasional bobcat around the Cross Creek reservoir, so it feels a world away from Highway 29.

Tasting Fees

Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Alila Napa Valley.

10:00 · Pickup at Meadowood or Alila Napa Valley

Meadowood, a resort in its own wooded valley at the foot of Howell Mountain, and Alila Napa Valley, a Hyatt resort in downtown St. Helena, are each about 10 minutes from Crystal Springs Road. Gibbs sets its own time, so we adjust the day around it. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Gibbs Vineyards

A private visit with the Gibbs family, arranged on your behalf. We plan about an hour and a quarter; the place, format and any fee are confirmed by the winery.

11:40 · Viader Vineyards & Winery

About 10 minutes away. A family estate on the steep lower slopes of Howell Mountain, home of the Cabernet Franc blend the family calls Liquid Cashmere. The Estate Tasting Experience pours three estate-grown red blends after a guided walk of the property ($100); we plan about 90 minutes. By appointment, Thursday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

1:15 · Lunch at The Charter Oak

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at The Charter Oak in St. Helena, Christopher and Martina Kostow's family-style New American restaurant, open daily from 11:30 a.m. (11 a.m. on weekends). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:30 · Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards

About 15 minutes away. A family-owned estate in quiet Conn Valley where the founder still makes the wine. The Signature Tasting in the cave is $135, 1.5 to 2 hours, with an optional charcuterie board. By appointment, Monday to Saturday, with the last tastings starting at 2:30 p.m.

4:20 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:45 p.m., about six and three-quarter hours after pickup.

About $235 per person in tasting fees for Viader and Anderson's Conn Valley, paid directly to each winery, plus Gibbs's fee, confirmed with the appointment.

Viader hosts Thursday to Saturday and Anderson's Conn Valley Monday to Saturday, so this day works Thursday, Friday or Saturday. The cave tasting can run two hours, so the day ends about 4:45 p.m.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
