About the Winery

Gellis Family Domain was founded in 2014 by Kyle Gellis, owner of Warped Cigars. His path to Napa Valley began in the tobacco fields of northern Nicaragua, where he grew interested in sustainable farming, before he moved to Napa to study biodynamic and sustainable practices. He borrows a Patek Philippe idea for the domain: you never really own it, you merely look after it for the next generation.

The flagship, Blue Monster, is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon named for his dogs, Apollo and Sarto, and the official site credits its fruit to Abreu's Las Posadas Vineyard on Howell Mountain. Cigar Aficionado reported that the 2016 debut was 50 cases, made at Benoit Touquette's Fait-Main facility. A second Cabernet, Until the End, began with the 2016 vintage; the 2021 releases were 75 and 100 cases.

The wine is sold to a mailing list, and the label works with Acme Fine Wines and Vintner's Collective. Gellis Family Domain publishes no tasting room or address, so it does not receive visitors. The day below goes up Howell Mountain to a farm winery and then to two St. Helena estates that do host, with lunch at Meadowood.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Alila Napa Valley.

10:00 · Pickup at Meadowood or Alila Napa Valley

Since Gellis Family Domain does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Meadowood, a resort at the foot of Howell Mountain, and Alila Napa Valley, on the hillside above St. Helena, are each about 25 minutes from the first stop near the top of the mountain. The day runs about six and a quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:25 · Black Sears

About 25 minutes away. A family farm and winery near the top of Howell Mountain, with tastings hosted by the farmer. The $50 visit includes a tasting, a vineyard wander and a look at the cellar; we allow about an hour. By appointment, Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

11:55 · Lunch at Forum at Meadowood

About 25 minutes away. Lunch at Forum, the main restaurant at Meadowood at the foot of Howell Mountain, with seasonal dishes drawn from the Meadowood farm. Lunch is served on weekdays, with brunch on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:15 · NEOTEMPO

About 12 minutes away. A family winery's private studio on Main Street in St. Helena, where each wine is poured with its own playlist, imagery and seasonal bites. The Private Portfolio Tasting is $95 to $125, 60 minutes. By reservation only; every visit is private, one small group at a time.

2:30 · Haynes Vineyard

About 8 minutes away. Wines from what the winery calls the oldest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines left in Napa Valley, planted in Coombsville in 1967 and tasted after a tour of Joe Heitz's original Home Ranch in St. Helena. A History of Coombsville is $150 plus tax, 90 to 120 minutes. By reservation, daily 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

4:00 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:15 p.m., about six and a quarter hours after pickup.

About $295 to $325 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Black Sears hosts Monday to Saturday and Forum serves lunch on weekdays, so plan this day for a weekday. The day runs a little past six hours; extra time is billed by the hour. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
