Elan Vineyards

About the Winery

Elan Vineyards is the Elliott-Smith family's estate on Atlas Peak Road, high in the mountains on the east side of Napa Valley. Proprietors Patrick and Linda Elliott-Smith have produced handcrafted Cabernet Sauvignon there since 1992, and the winery still presents itself as a family operation working with its own mountain-grown fruit.

The estate is in the Atlas Peak AVA, and the family farms it with sustainable practices. Cabernet Sauvignon is the focus, wines the family describes as remarkably balanced, elegant and long on the finish. Production is small, and older vintages, including an Elan Atlas Peak Red, turn up from time to time at wine auctions.

To buy, the winery asks people to contact it directly or to join its Wine Society. Elan lists no tastings, tours or visiting hours, and the estate is private. Since it does not host, the day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 9:45 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Silverado Resort or Andaz Napa.

9:45 · Pickup at Silverado Resort or Andaz Napa

Since Elan does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Silverado Resort, at the foot of Atlas Peak, is about 10 minutes from the first stop, and Andaz Napa, a boutique Hyatt in downtown Napa, about 20 minutes. The day runs about six and three-quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Hertelendy Vineyards

About 10 minutes away. An ultra-small mountain Cabernet house with Hungarian roots, tasted privately at The Caves at Soda Canyon, an underground winery with wide views over the valley. The Private Tasting with a tour of the caves is $95; we plan about an hour. By appointment and prepaid; no same-day requests.

11:20 · Jarvis Estate

About 20 minutes away. A winery built entirely inside 45,000 square feet of cave in the Vaca Mountains, with a stream and waterfall running through it. The Vintage Tour and Tasting walks the cave before the wines are poured, $150. Daily by appointment, with only a few small tours a day, so we book well ahead.

1:05 · Lunch at Angèle

About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Angèle, a French brasserie on the Napa River in downtown Napa, serving lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:40 · Shadybrook Estate Winery

About 12 minutes away. A family wine estate on the historic Rapp Ranch in Coombsville, with a 16,000-square-foot cave and an equestrian center that still offers vineyard horseback rides. Wine Tasting on the Grand Terrace with cheese and charcuterie is $95, 90 minutes. By reservation, daily; final seating at 3:30 p.m.

4:10 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:30 p.m., about six and three-quarter hours after pickup.

About $340 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

All three wineries and the restaurant are open daily, but Hertelendy takes no same-day requests and Jarvis tours fill weeks ahead, so book early. Back by about 4:30 p.m.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
