In 1954 Hedwig Detert used the proceeds from her family's Lake County ranch to buy 50 acres of the To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville from Martin Stelling's estate. For decades the family sold its grapes, first to Charles Krug and from 1966 to Robert Mondavi Winery. In 2000 her great-grandsons Tom Garrett, John Garrett and Bill Cover made the first Detert wine: 160 cases of Cabernet Franc.
The vineyard's claim to fame is its Cabernet Franc. Stelling planted what is thought to be the first Cabernet Franc in Napa Valley here in 1949, and in 1979 the East Block was replanted from that original budwood, now called the Detert clone. Tom Garrett makes the wines, after years at Turley, Joseph Phelps and Robert Mondavi, and he also runs Dakota Shy.
For anyone who loves Oakville history, standing in a block of To Kalon is a treat. Detert is a small family label rather than a tasting room, and the family takes questions about tasting reservations by phone or email; the format and any fee are confirmed when the visit is set. We arrange it on your behalf.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
