Calla Lily is a small estate in Pope Valley, on the eastern side of Howell Mountain at more than 800 feet. It was established by winemaker Cary Gott, a fourth-generation winemaker whose career included Sterling Vineyards, Mumm Napa and Seagram Classics, with a small group of businessmen. The first vines were planted in 1995, and Alejandro Maldonado has managed the vineyard since 1998.
The 20-acre estate vineyard is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (12 acres) and Petite Sirah (5 acres), with an acre each of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, and it includes pre-phylloxera vines. The flagship wines are the Ultimate Red and the Audax reserve Cabernet; the 2021 vintages were reviewed by Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate and others in 2024.
This is a quiet corner of Napa County, a scenic drive over Howell Mountain from St. Helena, and the estate hosts by appointment rather than with a public tasting room. Guests come for the vineyard and the wines, with the hills of Pope Valley all around. We arrange the appointment with the winery and confirm the time and fee for you.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Visits are by appointment, and days, hours, ages and group size are not published, so we confirm them when we book. Pope Valley is about 30 minutes from St. Helena over Howell Mountain.
Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Alila Napa Valley.
Meadowood, the resort east of St. Helena at the foot of Howell Mountain, and Alila Napa Valley, a Hyatt resort in downtown St. Helena, are each about 30 minutes from Pope Valley over Howell Mountain. The day runs close to seven hours because Pope Valley is a drive from the rest of the valley, and extra time can be added by the hour.
Visits are by appointment, arranged by phone or email with the winery; a vineyard visit is the heart of it, on 20 acres that include pre-phylloxera vines. Length and fees are not published, so we allow about 75 minutes and confirm the details when we book.
About 20 minutes away. A family Zinfandel estate in the hills above Chiles Valley, named for its red chert and green serpentine soils. The Tasting and Winery/Vineyard Tour is $60, about 90 minutes. By appointment for parties of four or fewer; the road up is narrow and winding.
About 25 minutes away. Lunch high on Rutherford Hill with the whole valley below. The Bar serves all day from 11:30 a.m., and The Restaurant on the terrace offers a prix fixe lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 15 minutes away. A family winery in the pines above the Silverado Trail, with caves cut into volcanic tuff and a tasting room hung with vintage skis. The Portfolio Tasting is $75, waived with a three-bottle purchase per person; we allow about an hour. By appointment daily, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Back by about 4:40 p.m., about six hours and 40 minutes after pickup.
About $135 per person in tasting fees for Green & Red and Hunnicutt, paid directly to each winery, plus Calla Lily's fee, to be verified upon reservation.
Green & Red takes parties of four or fewer, so larger groups need a different second stop, which we arrange. Calla Lily does not publish its days, so we confirm the morning appointment first. Lunch is a late one at 2:00, and the day runs about six hours and 40 minutes, back by about 4:40 p.m.
