Justin Hunnicutt Stephens founded HUNNICUTT in 2002, after growing up partly in Napa Valley, working in vineyards and wineries as a teenager and leaving a career in commercial real estate to learn the wine business from the ground up. He asked his friend Kirk Venge to make the wines, and Kirk still does. Justin's wife Seana joined in 2010, and the name comes from his grandmother, Nora Hunnicutt.
In 2008 the family found a 15-acre hillside site in the foothills of the Vaca Range, on the northern edge of the St. Helena AVA, and it took a year and a half just to dig an 18,000-foot network of caves into the volcanic tuff. Tall pines and madrones surround the winery, and all HUNNICUTT wines, plus the sister label D. R. Stephens Estate, are made and aged here: small lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot and Chardonnay.
Visits are by appointment every day, in a private tasting room that is modern but rustic, decorated with vintage skis and a road bike from the family's time off. The Portfolio Tasting pours a selection of current releases. The setting, the family says, brings to mind a remote northern California forest. Groups of up to 8 are welcome.
$75 per guest for the Portfolio Tasting of current releases, waived with the purchase of 3 bottles per person. The winery does not publish a length; we allow about an hour.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
