About the Winery

Don Bryant bought land on Pritchard Hill, above Lake Hennessey east of St. Helena, in 1986 and planted Cabernet Sauvignon. David Abreu planted the vines, and Helen Turley made the wines for the estate's first decade. Don's wife Bettina Bryant, a former American Ballet Theatre dancer, joined in 2007 and has led the estate as proprietor and president since 2014; today it goes by Bryant Estate.

The vineyard covers 13 acres at about 900 feet on the western slope above the lake, and Don later added an adjacent 13-acre vineyard. The estate farms organically and biodynamically, with chickens in the vines. KK Carothers is the winemaker and Michel Rolland the consulting enologist. The flagship is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Pritchard Hill, and Bettina, a blend from Howell Mountain vineyards, was first bottled in 2009. Antonio Galloni of Vinous called it "one of the most spectacular vineyards in Napa Valley."

The wines are offered to members by allocation, and new buyers join the waiting list on the estate's website. Bryant has no tasting room and publishes no visiting program, so it does not host public visits. The day below starts at Chappellet, also on Sage Canyon Road, and takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do open their doors.

Since Bryant does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. The day runs about seven hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:20 · Chappellet Winery

About 18 minutes away. Up on Pritchard Hill, the family's pyramid-roofed winery is the one Hugh Johnson called the most remarkable wine cathedral in the modern world, and guests love the vineyard views on the way up. The Pinnacle of Pritchard Hill Tour & Tasting is $125 for 90 minutes. By reservation, daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; 21 and over.

12:05 · Merus

About 15 minutes away. A ghost winery abandoned after Prohibition, restored in a canyon on the east side of the valley, where a cave tour leads to a seated tasting of six vintages of Merus Cabernet Sauvignon. The Collectors Tasting is $150, about 90 minutes, prepaid on Tock. By appointment only; no walk-ins.

1:50 · Lunch at Forum at Meadowood

About 8 minutes away. Lunch at Forum, the main restaurant at Meadowood at the foot of Howell Mountain, with seasonal dishes drawn from the Meadowood farm. Lunch is served on weekdays, with brunch on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:10 · Seavey Vineyard

About 8 minutes away. A family estate in Conn Valley whose small winery is an 1881 stone dairy barn. The Vintage Tasting & Tour is $125, 60 to 90 minutes: a private tour of the winery and cave, then a vertical tasting of five estate wines. Prepaid on Tock, with visits from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

4:40 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 5:00 p.m., about seven hours after pickup.

About $400 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

All three estates host daily; on weekends Forum serves brunch instead of lunch. The day runs about seven hours, back by about 5 p.m.
