BRION is the Cabernet project of Brion Wise, a chemical engineer by training who founded an oil company at 26 and later ventured into cotton farming in Australia and restaurants and wine bars in Boulder, Colorado. The first BRION Cabernet was harvested in 2009 from the Moon Mountain District in Sonoma, and BRION became a stand-alone project in 2018, releasing four single-vineyard Cabernets from the 2014 vintage.
The focus is single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Sources include Caldwell Vineyard in Coombsville, Oakville Ranch, Sleeping Lady near Yountville and Moon Mountain in Sonoma, and in 2023 BRION bought a property on Pritchard Hill that is under development. Three winemakers share the work, Julien Fayard, Mark Herold and Massimo Monticelli, and Wise says he looks for finesse and texture rather than power.
BRION sells through an allocation on its website, where list members sign in, and it lists only a post office box in Napa. There is no tasting room or visit program. Since BRION does not host, the day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do, starting at Caldwell, one of the vineyards BRION draws on.
BRION does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
