About the Winery

Bill Harlan, who founded Harlan Estate, started BOND in 1996 with a different idea: rather than one estate, a set of small hillside vineyards across Napa Valley, each bottled on its own like a grand cru. His son Will Harlan has led the family's wineries since 2020, and Cory Empting, part of the team since 2000, has been the winemaker since 2012.

BOND chose its five sites from more than 80 vineyards the team had worked with over a quarter century, each 7 to 11 acres: Melbury, near Lake Hennessey; Vecina, near the BOND winery in Oakville; St. Eden; Quella; and Pluribus, the highest, on the slopes of Spring Mountain. Every wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A second wine, Matriarch, is blended from barrels not chosen for the five crus, and Robert Parker named the 2013 Pluribus among his 20 most extraordinary red wines.

The wines are sold by allocation, requested through the form on bond.wine, and the winery asks that allocations go to people who intend to drink the wine; reselling within two years may affect future offers. BOND has no tasting room and publishes no visiting program, so it does not host public visits. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do.

Tasting Fees

BOND does not offer tastings.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Harvest Inn or Rancho Caymus Inn.

10:00 · Pickup at Harvest Inn or Rancho Caymus Inn

Since BOND does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Harvest Inn, a garden hotel at the south end of St. Helena, is about 5 minutes from the first stop, and Rancho Caymus Inn, at the Rutherford crossroads, about 10 minutes. The day runs a little over six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Young Inglewood Vineyards

About 5 minutes away. A small, organically farmed family estate on the St. Helena benchland, where every private tasting starts with a short walk through the winery and vines and is poured in a salon filled with the family's art. The Estate Tasting is $125, about 90 minutes. Prepaid on Tock, with times daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

12:00 · Staglin Family Vineyard

About 10 minutes away. A family estate on the Rutherford Bench since 1985, certified organic and solar powered, with its winery built underground in caves. The private visit walks the vineyard and caves before a tasting of the estate wines, $150, about 90 minutes. By appointment Tuesday to Saturday, with first access for members, so we request your date early; the estate confirms the start time.

1:40 · Lunch at Mustards Grill

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill on Highway 29 just north of Yountville, a Napa Valley favorite for more than 40 years, open daily for lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:55 · Cardinale

About 8 minutes away. A renovated stone winery on Highway 29 in Oakville with one of the valley's great panoramic views from the terrace, where every tasting is seated and paired with food from the chef of La Saison Napa Valley. An Introduction to Cardinale, four current releases with seasonal bites, is $125; we plan about an hour and a quarter. By appointment, prepaid, with times from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

4:10 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:25 p.m., a little over six hours after pickup.

About $400 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
