About the Winery

The Smith family bought their Calistoga land in 1994 and have farmed it ever since. Warren Barlow Smith and Jeanne Smith started out with their son Barr, a geology major, and daughter-in-law Ann, who studied botany, and their grandchildren Alyssa and Zachary are now the third generation. The family calls itself farmers at heart, with a passion for wine and science.

The wine began as a small homemade batch of Cabernet Sauvignon for family and friends. Winemaker Art Finklestein urged the family to sell it, and all 25 cases went at once. Today the 50-acre estate in the Calistoga AVA makes about 1,500 cases, all estate grown and organically farmed: two 100 percent Cabernets, a Cabernet blend, a Merlot and a Zinfandel.

There is no public tasting room, so a visit here is personal. The family invites people to get in touch about a visit, and wine club members get complimentary estate visits. We make the request for you and confirm what the family can offer before your day. Barlow also pours at events around the valley, listed on its events page.
