About the Winery

Band of Vintners was formed in 2014 by seven wine industry friends who met at a tasting group led by Dan Petroski. Their shared goal was one Napa Valley wine of exceptional value. After a yearslong hiatus, the label came back with Master Sommelier Desmond Echavarrie, a former French Laundry sommelier, as band manager, and it is now brought to you by Scale Wine Group in St. Helena.

The winemakers are Britt Nichols, whose path ran through Chappellet, Jordan, Peter Michael and Philippe Melka, and Evyn Cameron, a Per Se alumna who worked at White Rock, Saintsbury, Seavey and Cliff Lede and was head winemaker at Crocker & Starr. Bryan Weil of the Willamette Valley is also in the band. The lineup is a Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and a Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 2024 the San Francisco Chronicle noted the relaunched Cabernet's $35 price against a Napa Valley average of $108 a bottle, and Virginie Boone wrote that it probably offers the best quality-to-price ratio of any Napa Cabernet. It is sold online, with no tasting room, so it does not receive visitors. The day below pairs wood-fired bread, art at Brasswood and a tour of Joe Heitz's home ranch.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Rancho Caymus Inn or Harvest Inn.

10:00 · Pickup at Rancho Caymus Inn or Harvest Inn

Since Band of Vintners does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Rancho Caymus Inn in Rutherford and Harvest Inn in St. Helena are each about 8 minutes from the first stop. The day runs a little over six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Oakham Estate Winery

About 8 minutes away. A family winery on Zinfandel Lane where breads come out of a wood-fired oven at your table. The Wood-Fired Rustic Bread and Charcuterie Pairing is $100 with three wines, booked a week ahead; we allow about 75 minutes. Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

12:00 · Strala Vineyards

About 12 minutes away. A husband-and-wife label from a leading vineyard manager and a barrel expert, poured with food and art at the Brasswood Estate north of St. Helena. The Classic Tasting is $75; we allow about an hour. Seatings daily at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m., reserved at least 48 hours ahead.

1:10 · Lunch at Market

About 8 minutes away. Lunch at Market, an American restaurant in a historic brick and stone building on Main Street in St. Helena, open for lunch Monday to Saturday from noon. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:30 · Haynes Vineyard

About 8 minutes away. A tour of Joe Heitz's original Home Ranch on Taplin Road, then a seated tasting of wines from what the winery calls the oldest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines left in Napa Valley, planted in Coombsville in 1967. $150 plus tax, 90 to 120 minutes. By reservation, daily 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

4:00 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:15 p.m., about six and a quarter hours after pickup (a little later if the Haynes tour runs the full two hours).

About $325 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries (plus tax at Haynes), paid directly to each winery.

Oakham is open Monday to Friday and books its bread pairing a week ahead, and Market serves lunch Monday to Saturday, so plan this day for a weekday. The day runs a little past six hours; extra time is billed by the hour. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
